The New Mexico State University track and field team completed its first in-state meet of the indoor season on Saturday with the Cherry and Silver Invitational.
Seven different records were set or improved upon after the meet. Overall, 16 records have been set over the past two meets to open up the 2013 indoor track and field season.
Junior Alishia Perkins and sophomore Jenna Banegas both competed in the 60m. Perkins placed seventh overall with a time of 7.66, moving her up to fourth place all-time for NM State, and Banegas placed 13th overall with a time of 7.75. Last week, Perkins was named Western Athletic Conference Athlete of the Week.
Perkins also competed in the 200m, placing eighth overall with a time of 24.79. Freshman Brianna Cromartie also competed in the 200m and made another impressive showing early in her Aggie career, placing 10th with a time of 24.89 to place her seventh all-time in the NM State record books. Banegas, sophomore Kendra Walker, junior Zoe Meade, senior Deserae Cota and freshman Kelsi Gonzales also competed in the event.
Cromartie put on an even stronger display in the 400m, placing third overall with a time of 55.56 to move her up to second all-time in the NM State record books. Senior LaSasha Aldredge also competed in the 400m, running a time of 56.14 for sixth place overall.
Three different Aggies placed in the top 10 overall in the 800m. Freshman Latrice Brooks finished fifth overall with a time of 2:18.55 to place her fifth all-time for NM State. Sophomore Diana Hawk followed up by finishing sixth with a time of 2:18.89, placing her sixth all-time for NM State. Senior Samantha Thompson rounded out the top 10 by finishing 10th with a time of 2:21.15. Freshman Mayra Chavez, junior Sarabel Bojorquez, sophomore Victoria Trujillo and junior Christiana Barela also competed in the event.
In the 1-mile run, Hawk finished sixth overall with a time of 5:02.40 to place second overall in the NM State record books. Senior Madelyn Stoltze, sophomore Caroline Lewiecki, Bojorquez, Chavez, Barela, Trujillo, and junior Carly Porter also competed in the event.
In the 3,000m, junior Gael Sanchez, senior Adrienne Larson and junior Rylie Hightower each competed in the event.
In the pole vault, sophomore Taylor Black marked a height of 10-06.00 (3.20m), tying for third all-time for NM State. Senior Marissa Gonzales also competed in the event.
In the 4x400m relay, the Aggies ran a time of 3:47.71 to place second all-time in NM State for that event. Aldredge, Perkins, Cromartie, and Kelsi Gonzales ran in the record event for the Aggies.
