The Aggies tallied nine hits but scored only four times falling 16-4 to Sacramento State at Presley Askew Field, Saturday, April 13. New Mexico State falls to 19-16 on the year and 5-6 in Western Athletic Conference play. The Hornets improved to 20-15 on the season and 6-5 in league play.
The Aggies took the first lead of the game when senior Kyle Phillips scored on a solo shot over the right field wall. It was his fourth home run on the year as after he finished the evening going 1-of-3 at the dish. Phillips is hitting .307 on the year with a .504 slugging percentage.
Starting pitcher Casey Collins working 3.2 innings was credited with the loss after allowing seven runs to score, five of them earned. Senior Michael Ormseth came in to relieve Collins and threw for 2.1 innings striking out four batters and allowing four runs to score.
The game was tight through three innings before the Hornets exploded for seven runs in the top of the fourth. The score was 11-3 after NM State scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth but Sac State tallied five more runs in the top of the seventh to take a 16-3 lead. The Aggies tallied two hits and one run in the seventh but it was not enough to avoid the 10-run rule.
With the series tied at 1-1, NM State and the Hornets will face off in a rubber match, Sunday, April 14 at 12:05 p.m. (MT). The game is scheduled to air over the radio waves on KSNM AM 570 in Las Cruces while it can also be heard online at www.NMStateSports.com.
