El Paso, Texas – On Friday May 3, 2013 80 4th and 5th graders from Colin Powell Elementary School will visit Ascarate Golf Course home of the First Tee of Greater El Paso. These students have participated in The First Tee National School Program in their school. The First Tee National School Program is currently in 24 elementary in the EPISD and 8 in the YISD.
Nationally, over two million students and more than 4,200 schools currently offer The First Tee National School Program, which launched in 2004. The program’s curriculum is aligned with national standards and reinforces the physical activity objectives mandated through the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills for Physical Education (TEKS). PE teachers will receive a special in-person training to learn how to deliver the lessons.
“We are so excited to see the kids transition from the elementary seeing to an actual golf course.” said Kristi Albers, Executive Director of The First Tee of Greater El Paso, “we are grateful for the grant we received from the Paso Del Norte Health Foundation to fund this program in El Paso.”
The First Tee National School Program helps students develop an appreciation for the positive personal and social values associated with the game in each lesson; engages students in safe, fun lessons and activities that lead to motor skill development; and presents students with an introduction to the game. Students also are introduced to The First Tee Nine Core Values™: honesty, integrity, respect, responsibility, courtesy, sportsmanship, confidence, judgment and perseverance. They will learn about physical, social, and emotional wellness through The First Tee Nine Healthy Habits™, which are integrated into each lesson. The program also assists students in transferring the skills and habits to other areas of their lives.
