Despite losing to I-10 Rival New Mexico State Saturday, UTEP Head Coach Tim Floyd lauded the Pan American Center crowd of over 10,700 for an impressive basketball atmosphere that made him reminiscent of the golden years of the rivalry.
Because of his nostalgia, Floyd was asked if he would like to return New Mexico to the schedule. He replied simply, "it's really ridiculous."
The Lobos had appeared on the Miners schedule as a home-and-home series for nearly 90 years but ended after 2011 following an altercation between the Miner and Lobo coaching staffs before their NIT matchup in Albuquerque. Since then, UNM Head Coach Steve Alford has refused to schedule UTEP telling 770 KKOB, "The UTEP game is something I'm not in favor of."
"It makes no sense for one person to dictate that a series isn't played home and home every year. Who is that person to dictate what's gone on for 90 years. You tell me why that makes sense," said Floyd.
One of the Southwest's classic rivalries appears to have no future until the two sides can forgive and forget.
