Las Cruces middle school student wins at Ringside World Boxing Championships

Amy Salinas, 12, of Las Cruces, won the Ringside championship belt at the Ringside Wold Championships in Kansas City, MO this past weekend. Salinas, a boxer with the Las Cruces Police Athletic League (PAL), beat Arazaely Galindo of San Antonio, TX by unanimous decision in the female 95 lb. division. This is the second time Salinas has won at this tourmanment. Salinas is in 7th grade and attends Sierra Middle School in Las Cruces.

Edwin Acosta, age 18 of Las Cruces, won a second place trophy in the 141 lb. division. Which is an improvement over last years results where Acosta made it as far as the semi-finals.

The 2013 Ringside World Championships had over 1,500 athletes competing in over 1,000 bouts. It is one of the biggest amateur boxing competitions in the country.

Las Cruces PAL Boxing is known for its programs to take "at-risk" youth off the streets and teaching them discipline through boxing. However youth of all backgrounds are welcomed at the Sammy Burke Youth Boxing Center.
