Tempe, AZ — The New Mexico State men’s golf team ended its 2012-13 season with a sixth-place finish at the 2013 NCAA Regional Golf Tournament in Tempe, Ariz. The Aggies carded a final round team score of 4-under par, 276 and finished the tournament at even-par, 840 (285-279-276).
“I’m extremely pleased with our play today and the entire tournament,” head coach Mike Dirks said. “We played great golf this tournament. The guys really stayed focused and played their game and the results showed.”
Three Aggies finished the tournament at even-par or better. Senior Justin Shin rounded out his collegiate career with a tournament low for round three with a 5-under par, 65. In his final round, Shin recorded six birdies and just one bogey. Shin finished the tournament tied for 13th overall, 3-under par, 207 (70-72-65).
Sophomore Brett Walker carded his second round of under par golf with a 1-under par, 69 in the final round. Walker finished the tournament at 2-under par, 208 (71-68-69), tying for 17th. He recorded three birdies in the final round. Senior Derek Baade also closed out his collegiate career with a solid tournament. He was even-par, 210 (71-69-70) for the tournament, carding an even-par, 70 in the final round. Baade had three birdies in the final round.
Freshman Kenneth Fadke was 2-over par, 72 in the final round, placing tied for 50th overall at 9-over par, 219 (77-70-72). He tallied four birdies in the final round of play. Junior Willy Hogan was 5-over par, 75, in round three, finishing the tournament at 11-over par, 221, placing him tied for 56th.
UCLA won the team regional championship with a three-round score of 30-under par, followed by Georgia (-13), UCF (-13), Texas A&M (-11) and Arizona State (-8). All five teams will now advance to the NCAA Championships. Greg Eason of UCF won the individual title at 12-under par.
