El Paso, TX — The New Mexico State baseball team snapped five game losing streak by defeating Northern Colorado 16-4 in a Western Athletic Conference game, Friday, April 4 in Greeley, Colo. The Aggies move to 11-18 overall and 3-4 in WAC play, while UNCO falls to 5-24 on the year and 0-7 in league action.
The Aggies used a season-high 23 hits to score 16 runs with left-fielder Michael Paulson leading the offensive surge going 4-of-5 with three RBI and two runs scored. Third baseman Derek Umphres also had a 4-of-5 day at the dish with two RBI and three runs scored.
Starting left-hand pitcher Christopher Bradley earned the win working 6.0 innings while striking out six of the 26 batters he faced. He also gave up four walks and three runs but had the Aggie offense to help him get his second win of the year. Bradley is now 2-4 on the season in nine starts.
Northern Colorado scored two runs in the bottom of the first to take a 2-0 lead but the Aggies exploded in the top of the third with five NM State base runners crossing the plate. Right fielder Michael Medina got things started when he was hit by a pitch to lead-off the inning. There were six consecutive hits after Medina got plunked, including a triple by first baseman Kristoffer Koerper. NM State finished the inning with five runs on six hits.
The Aggies scored another three runs on two hits in the fourth with Ryan Wagner coming into pinch-hit, picking up an RBI on a single through the right side. Wagner finished with a 3-for-3 day at the plate, including a three run bomb in the eighth to help seal the victory.
NM State scored one run in the fifth, two in the sixth, another in the seventh and four more in the eighth to tally its 11th win of the year. The Aggies face Northern Colorado in game two of the three-game WAC series, Saturday, April 5 at 12 p.m. (MT) in Greeley, Colo.
