El Paso, TX (KDBC) — New Mexico State was determined to have a better showing in their third straight trip to the NCAA Tournament and did that taking 4-seed San Diego State to overtime before falling 73-69 in the first round Thursday.
Aggie senior Kevin Aronis buried a three with 6-seconds left in regulation that tied the game at 60 and gave an NCAA record 4th overtime tournament game of the day.
Sophomore center Sim Bhullar had 14 points and seven boards for the 13th-seeded Aggies before fouling out in the OT. Daniel Mullings led the Aggies with 18.
Five scored in double figures for NM State who shot 40% for the game from the field.
The Aztecs were led by senior Xavier Thames who led all scores with 23 points. San Diego State advances to face 12-seed North Dakota State who needed overtime as well to beat 5th seed Oklahoma.
