Henderson, Nv. – The New Mexico State men’s golf team holds a commanding 17-stroke lead after the second round of the 2013 WAC Championship, at the par-72, 7,313-yard Rio Secco Golf Club. The Aggies carded a 10-over par, 298 in round two and now sit at 8-over par, 584 (286-298) after two rounds of play.
“The wild was really hard today in the second round but we should be use to it being from Las Cruces,” head coach Mike Dirks said. “We hung in there today. We had some hard times during the round but the difference today for our team was that we finished strong. We were able to put some distance between ourselves and the other teams. I’m very proud of our effort today.”
Junior Willy Hogan and freshman Kenneth Fadke are currently tied for first overall following the second round of play. Hogan carded a second round score of 3-over par, 75, with two birdies on the scorecard. He is now 1-over par, 145 (70-75). Fadke fired a 2-over par, 74 in round two with two birdies as well. He is also 1-over par, 145 (71-74).
Senior Derek Baade was 5-over par, 77 in round two, placing him in a tied for fourth. He is 3-over par, 147 (70-77) for the tournament. Baade carded two birdies on the day. Senior Justin Shin had the lowest score of the entire field in round two with an even-par, 72. Shin recorded four birdies in the round, including three on the final four holes. He is now 6-over par, 150 (78-72) and tied for 14th overall.
Sophomore Brett Walker shot a 6-over par, 78 in round two and currently sits in a tie for 23rd overall at 9-over par, 153 (75-78).
NM State leads by 17-strokes at 10-over par, followed by UT-Arlington (+25), San Jose State (+25), UTSA (+28) and Utah State (+28).
The three-day tournament concludes on Wednesday with the final-round tee times beginning at 7 a.m. Fans can follow live at www.GolfStat.com. The Aggies will tee off at 10:40 a.m. (MT)
