Las Cruces, NM — The New Mexico State softball team won its second game of the day at the 2014 WAC Softball Tournament, with an 12-3 win over Kansas City. The win pushed the Aggies to a 31-22 on the season and into the championship game tomorrow morning at noon (MT) against Utah Valley.
The Aggies scored 12 runs on 13 hits, including three homeruns in the game. Tatum Reedy led NM State at the plate, going 3-for-4 with five RBI and a walk-off three run homerun to end the game in the sixth inning. Fiana Finau went 2-for-4 with three RBI and a homerun, while Staci Rodriguez was 2-for-3 at the plate with two RBI, a homerun and three runs scored. Malena Padilla was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored as well.
Celisha Walker got the win for the Aggies pitching all six innings, allowing three runs on nine hits, while striking out one batter. She moves to 9-6 on the season, pitching her fifth complete game.
Kansas City took an early 1-0 lead on the Aggies after two hits and an error allowed the Kangaroos to jump out on top. The Aggies went down in order in the bottom of the inning, as UMKC continued to lead 1-0. The Kangaroos added another run in the top of the second, making it 2-0.
Lacey Rother hit a lead-off double to begin the bottom half of the second. She advanced to third on a ground out by Rodriguez with one out. Padilla then singled to center, scoring Rother, making it a 2-1 game. Dodd then singled, advancing Padilla to third. Reedy then reached on a fielder’s choice, as Dodd was out at second. Haley Nakamura then flied out to left to end the inning, but not before NM State made it a one run game at 2-1.
Walker shut the Kangaroos down in the top of the third as UMKC went down 1-2-3, but still lead 2-1.
Brennalyn Nakamura led the charge with a single to center and advanced to second on a sac bunt by Adams in the bottom of the second. Finau then singled up the middle, scoring B. Nakamura from second, tying the game at 2-2. Finau would advance on the play to second on the throw to home. Rother then walked to put runners at first and second with just one out. Dohrwardt then went in to pinch run for Finau at second. Rodriguez then singled to left, scoring Dohrwardt from second, as the Aggies took a 3-2 lead. Padilla then flied out to center as the Aggies had runners at first and second with two outs. Dodd then singles to third to load the bases, as Reedy came to the plate. Reedy blasted a two run double to the left center wall, giving NM State a 5-2 lead. H. Nakamura would strike out to end the inning but not before the Aggies scored four runs to take the lead.
In the top of the fourth, Walker got two quick outs before loading the bases but she forced a fly out to left allowing no runs, as the Aggie maintained a 5-2 lead.
Adams walked to put a runner on base in the bottom of the fourth with one out. Finau then hit her 14th homerun of the season to deep center field, putting two more runs on the board for the Aggies, making it 7-2. Rother would then struck out for the second out of the inning. Rodriguez wasted no time with her at-bat hitting her 14th homerun of the season as well, making it 8-2 with just two outs. Padilla singled up the middle to extend the Aggies fourth inning. Dodd then walked to put runner at first and second, still with two outs. Reedy then hit an infield single to load the bases. N. Nakamura stepped to the plate and lined out to the third baseman, but not before NM State adds three more runs to take an 8-2 lead.
Kansas City went three up, three down in the top of the fifth, as the Aggies continued to lead 8-2.
Brennalyn Nakamura walked to start the Aggies off in the bottom of the fifth inning. Adams then flied out to center for the first out in the inning. Finau stepped to the plate with a chance to end the game with one swing of the bat. She would hit a grounder to third, reaching on a fielder’s choice, as B. Nakamura was out at second. Rother would then strike out looking to end the inning. The Aggies still led 8-2 after five innings.
UMKC loaded the bases in the top of the sixth with one out. The Kangaroos would hit a comeback to Walker but she was forced to go to first base with ball for the second out, allowing a run to score. The next batter was out 1-3, for the third out, as NM State leads 8-3 after five and a half innings.
Rodriguez was hit by a pitch to begin the bottom of the sixth. Padilla then walked to put runners on first and second with no outs. Dodd then reached on an error by the third baseman, allowing Rodriguez to score and Padilla to advance to third and Dodd to advance to second with no outs, as NM State extended its lead to 9-3. Reedy then crushed a three-run bomb to end the game as the Aggies won 12-3 and advance to the championship game on Saturday morning.
The Aggies will face Utah Valley at noon (MT) Saturday in the championship game. Because of the double elimination format, the Aggies will need to win the first game at noon to push the tournament to a second championship game tomorrow at approximately 3 p.m. (MT).
