NMSU volleyball moves back into first in WAC

The New Mexico State volleyball team was dominant in front of its home crowd sweeping Texas-Pan American 25-13, 25-13, 25-15, Saturday, Oct. 26 in the Pan American Center. The Aggies are in first place in the Western Athletic Conference at 8-2, while moving to 13-10 on the year.

The Aggies posted a .380 hitting percentage and held the Broncs to a negative hitting percentage as red-shirt sophomore Gwen Murphy led the way with a .727 hitting percentage, a match-high nine kills and two solo blocks. Senior middle hitter Desiree Scott added eight kills on a .545 hitting percentage to go along with three total blocks.

NM State and the Broncs were tied four times in set one with the final tie coming a 6-6. After a Murphy kill, senior Ciara Brown, who finished the afternoon with 13 assists, served up 10 points to give the Aggies a 16-7 lead. NM State marked a .333 hitting percentage and held the Broncs to a negative hitting percentage to cruise to a 25-13 set one win.

The Aggies fell behind 2-1 and 3-2 in set two but eventually took the lead at 6-5 when a UTPA attacker marked an error. NM State extended its lead by 12 at 20-8 when senior Preslie Alexander marked one of her four kills. A kill by freshman Audra Jones sealed the set two by the score of 25-13. NM State held the moment into set three taking an early 3-0 lead. The Aggies would not relinquish the lead in the set as they marked 11 kills on a .417 team-hitting percentage, with only one kill. NM State put UTPA away with a 25-15 win.

Sophomore Taylor Livoti finished with a team-high 16 assists and senior Stephanie Ziegler tallied a team-high seven kills.

The Aggies head out on the road next week taking on Idaho, Thursday, Oct. 31 in Moscow, Idaho and Seattle U, Saturday, Nov. 2 in Seattle, Wash. Saturday’s match against the Redhawks is scheduled to air on the radio at KSNM AM 570.

*WAC Note – Seattle U and Utah Valley are both 7-3 in WAC play and are just behind NM State in the WAC standings. The two teams play each other in Orem, Utah at 7pm, Saturday, Oct. 26.
