(CNN) — Canada won the women's ice hockey gold medal at the Winter Olympics on Thursday with a 3-2 overtime victory over the United States.
Marie-Philip Poulin scored the winning goal in Sochi for Canada, which has won four consecutive gold medals in the event.
The United States led 2-0 with just under four minutes left in regulation, but Canada's Brianne Jenner scored to cut the lead in half and Poulin netted the tying goal in regulation with 55 seconds remaining.
The United States, which won the first women's ice hockey gold in 1998, had taken a 2-0 lead on goals from Meghan Duggan in the second period and Alex Carpenter in the third.
The Americans had a chance to ice the game after Canada pulled its goaltender in the final minutes, but a U.S. shot hit the left post and went wide.
