Abiola Onakoya proved to be a tough competitor taking the track in three events and dominating the race at the UTEP Invitational on Saturday.
Junior Abiola Onakoya registered the ninth-fastest time in the nation in the 400m dash. The sprinter crossed the finish line with a season-best time of 46.22, which also ranks him first in Conference USA.
Teammate A-Shawni Mitchell also improved his time in the 400m, posting the second-best time in the league of 46.22.
Onakoya also took the track in the men’s 200m and clocked in a personal best of 20.83. His time earned him the No. 15 spot in the national rankings and the No. 1 spot in C-USA.
The men’s 4x400m relay (Carnell Horn, A-Shawni Mitchell, Daniel Tarango and Onakoya) finished second overall. The squad took the track for the second time this season and recorded a time of 3:09.85.
Also setting a national top mark was junior Richard Olsson in the javelin throw. Olsson registered a personal best of 72.53m (237-11) taking first at the meet. The thrower’s toss also secured him the No. 8 spot in the national rankings.
For the first time this season the men’s 4x100m relay finished the race on a very positive note. Freshman Sven Zellner was the opening leg for the Miners and stormed by to put the Miners in good position and handing it off to Conference Champion Mark Jackson, followed by Kristian Dillard and closing he relay was senior Anthony Wright. The team clocked in a time of 40.59 ranking them second in Conference USA, thus far.
Improving his time once again was All-American AnthonyRotich in the 1,500m. The sophomore crossed the finish line first setting apersonal best of 3:47.54. The C-USA Champions time also is the second-best time in the league. Senior Elkana Rotich was second posting a time of 3:53.52.
Freshman Sven Zellner bested his time again as he took the track for the second time this season. The hurdler took fifth place overall in the 110m hurdles with a time of 14.41. He is now ranked fourth in C-USA performance list in the 110m hurdles.
El Paso native Daniel Tarano concluded the 800m run taking third place with a time of 1:53.58.
Sophomore Demetris Elia kicked off the meet for the men’s team with the hammer throw. The thrower finished third overall at the meet with a mark of 56.72m (186-01). Alberto Martinez from the University of Chihuahua was the top finisher of the event with a toss of 59.07m (193-09).
In the men’s high jump, former Miner Mickael Hanany set the third-best mark in the world with a leap of 2.26m (7-05.00).
The women’s 4x100m relay blazed past the competition clocking in a season-best time of 44.81 earning the No. 3 spot in the Conference USA rankings. The squad was made up of Brianna McGhee, Yolanda Suggs, Janice Jackson and Magen Del Pino.
Taking the track at Kidd Field for one final time was senior Magen Del Pino in the 100m dash. The sprinter went out with a bang claiming the top spot in the medal stand with a time of 11.52.
Senior Yolanda Suggs conquered the women’s 200m dash setting the 39th-fastest time in the nation of 23.60. The sprinter finished first overall in he event and is now ranked third in the league.
Mariah Bowers finished second overall in the women’s 800m run recording another season best of 2:13.80. Jackline Ekai crossed the finish line sixth with a time of 2:18.27.
Hurdler Janice Jackson dominated the women’s 100m hurdles recording a time of 13.37 W: 1.0. This is the Miners first time of the season that isn’t wind aided above a 2.0. Freshman Brianna McGhee crossed the finish line fourth overall with a time of 13.81.
Competing in the women’s hammer throw for the first time this season was sophomore Taylor Gunn. The thrower registered a mark of 46.82m (153-07) taking second place, while teammate Krystal Flemings was third with a toss of 44.37m (145-07).
Gunn also competed in the discus and finished second overall with a season-best mark of 48.76m (160-00).
