Saturday's $85,000 Pepsi Cola Stakes attracts stellar field

A stellar field of 12 stakes horses has assembled for Saturday’s $85,000 Pepsi Cola Stakes at Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino. As part of Pepsi Day at the Races, free Pepsi products will be on hand.

The finest New Mexico-bred three-year-olds will compete over six furlongs in the Pepsi Cola (10th race). Trainer Todd Fincher will saddle three entrants include double stakes winners Kiss My Hennessy and Thermal. Kiss My Hennessy won last spring’s Copper Top Futurity and is loaded with speed. Casey Lambert is the regular pilot. Lambert and Fincher have combined to win three stakes races this meet. Thermal won stakes races at Ruidoso Downs and Zia Park last year and is a stretch running artist. Both horses have earned in excess of $173,000. The third Fincher runner in the race is the impressive maiden winner Hush’s Storm.

The Red Hedeman Mile winner Storms Surprise races for local owner Margaret Bloss and is in peak form. The versatile stakes winner also won George Maloof Futurity at Albuquerque and remains effective going 6 furlongs. He handily defeated Attila’s Hurricane and Indication N M in the Red Hedeman.

The very quick Attila’s Hurricane should appreciate the cut back in distance the most. The son of Attila’s Storm rattled through two wins at Zia Park with consummate ease last fall. Isaias Enriquez returns for the mount. Allowance winner Devons Ca Ching also rates as an important part of a great field.

The $50,000 KOFX Radio Handicap at 350 yards is set for Sunday.

Post time on Saturday and Sunday is 12:25 p.m.
