SISD holds James Butler Spring Games

Wednesday, March 27, 2013 - 9:53pm

More than 300 students participated in Socorro ISD’s sixth annual James Butler Spring Games. SISD’s special needs students participated in track and field events, such as 10 and 25 meter walks, assisted walks, 25, 50, 100, 200 and 400 meter runs. Other events included relay races, wheelchair races with and without assistance, bike races, ball throws (all grades) and javelin throws (secondary students).

Each session with elementary and high school students began with a mini parade of all the athletes to recognize and cheer on the students.

The James Butler Spring Games is a highly anticipated event each year in SISD involving the special education department, faculty and staff, many community members and volunteers from across the city. Parents and families attend to cheer on their children and see them succeed in this exciting and fun athletic event. The games are named after James Butler, a former physical education teacher, athletic coach and an adaptive physical education teacher in the special education department who was highly involved in the games and dedicated his life to ensuring students succeeded in athletics and special education.
