Trailblazers sign to play baseball in college

Orlando Garcia, Jimmy Cubillos, Eddie Varela and Michael Urquidi are being recognized for their outstanding athletic performances and achievements.

Orlando Garcia was recruited by the Texas Tech Raiders. The shortstop standout has played on the varsity team since his freshmen year. This summer, he played in the Area Code Games in California and was selected to play for the Cincinnati Reds team.

Cubillos will sign with the El Paso Community College. The four year letterman was invited to try out for Team USA 16 and under squad, a 16 and under team his freshmen year. Cubillos plays pitcher and outfielder.

Varela, who received three scholarship offers, agreed to sign with EPCC Tejanos. As a junior, he was selected Second Team All-District team pitcher. He has played varsity since his sophomore year.

Outfielder Michael Urquidi will sign with Angelo State in Texas. The senior is a third time all district shortstop, who was voted to the All City team by the El Paso Times. Urquidi will pursue a degree in nursing.

“We are extremely proud of our athletes. They exemplify what we are looking for in an Americas baseball player. They are good athletes and most importantly good people,” said Jesse Muñoz, head baseball coach at Americas.
