The UTEP soccer team will lock up with Stephen F. Austin in the championship contest of the 14th-annual Border Shootout at University Field at 12 p.m. MT Sunday. The Miners (3-1-1) rode a pair of goals by senior Jade Babcock and a good defensive effort to topple UC-Riverside, 2-0, on Sept. 6 while the Ladyjacks (3-1-1) notched their fourth shutout of the season in a 2-0 conquest at NM State earlier in that day.

In order to beat the heat, all fans who bring an umbrella will receive free admission. It will also be “Youth Kids Day.”

UTEP is riding a 16-match unbeaten streak at the tournament (15-0-1) but SFA will be a formidable foe. The Ladyjacks are currently ranked seventh in the NSCAA/Continental Tire NCAA Division I Women's Central Poll. They have been ranked as high as fourth in the poll, and picked up a pair of votes for the national top-25 poll on Aug. 27.

“SFA is a great soccer program that has received votes for top 25 in the country,” UTEP head coach Kevin Cross said.

“They have an athletic attack. UTEP Soccer is up for the challenge and looks forward to matching up against a quality side. We urge El Paso to come out and support UTEP Soccer as it makes a huge difference in our results. Thank you for your support of UTEP Soccer.”

It will mark the seventh meeting all time between UTEP and SFA. The Miners lead the series, 4-2, but SFA successfully defended its home pitch in the most-recent match-up (1-0, 9/1/11).

Babcock is pacing the Orange and Blue’s attack with a trio of tallies, while Angela Cutaia has also found the back of the net twice. Aleah Davis, Azia Nicholson and Tayler O’Hayre are responsible for the other goals on the season. Junior netminder Sarah Dilling has been sharp, registering 17 saves on 20 shots faced, including turning away all three shots in the shutout on Sept. 6.

SFA is off to a 3-1-1 start, which comes as no surprise given its recent success. It rolled to a school-record mark of 17-4-0 while competing in the 2012 NCAA Tournament. The Ladyjacks also won the Southland Conference crown for the second time in as many years.
