UTEP football player nominated for 2013 Armed Forces Merit Award

Senior Michael Kelley has beennominated for the 2013 Armed Forces Merit Award presented by the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA).

The linebacker is the second nominee that has been announced by the organization.

Kelley is in his second season with the Miners after completing an eight-year run with the U.S. Army. The senior earned a scholarship this season and has already made four appearances for UTEP and registered two tackles for the Miners last week against Tulsa.

The Iraq war veteran served the U.S. Army from October, 2003 to June, 2011. He was stationed in Fort Bragg, N.C. (2004-05), Darmstadt Germany (2005-07) and Fort Bliss, Texas (2007-11). He worked in communications including as a switching system operator. His highest title was platoon sergeant (2009-11). He and his wife, Denise, have two sons, Kenneth (six years old) and Michael Jr., who just turned two years old.
