The 2013 Conference USA Women’s Tennis Championship bracket was announced on Monday. In first round action, the No. 12-seed Miners (12-11, 1-2 C-USA) will face the No. 5-seed Mustangs (12-9, 2-2) on Thursday (8 a.m. CT) at the John E. Hoff Tennis Courts, located on the University of Houston campus.
SMU is currently ranked No. 52 in the nation.
If UTEP advances, they will face the winner between No. 4-seed Tulane (16-6, 3-1) and No. 13-seed Southern Miss (0-20, 0-5) in second round action scheduled for Friday (10 a.m. CT). The Tulane and Southern Miss first-round match is set for Thursday (8 a.m. CT).
First-year head coach Mark Roberts, along with familiar and fresh faces, helped turn the program around from two wins in 2012 to 12 this spring. Southern Miss fell victim to one of the victories as the Miners won, 6-1, on March 29.
Two of the fresh faces that have contributed to the turnaround are freshmen Matilda Rose Tench and Jamie-Leigh Michau. Both have combined for 14 dual match singles wins, while Michau has won her last three and Tench has four wins at the No. 5 spot.
The familiar faces – senior Martina Trierweiler, juniors Rebeca Calvillo, Marie LeBlond, Gabi Vazquez, and sophomore Anastasiya Sylenko – were part of that disastrous 2012 spring. But all have contributed in a big way as all set career highs in dual match singles victories this spring. Trierweiler improved from three wins to 12 wins, Calvillo from nine to 16, LeBlond from 13 to 15, Vazquez from four to 16, and Sylenko from one to two.
Calvillo has played exceptionally well at the No. 1 spot, as she is currently 12-5. Trierweiler is 10-6 at the No. 2 spot; Vazquez is 11-3 at No. 3; LeBlond is 11-3 at No. 4 and Michau is 5-4 at No. 6.
On the doubles side, Calvillo-Trierweiler is 13-9 at No. 1, LeBlond-Vazquez is 15-7 at No. 2, and Tench-Sylenko is 5-4 at No. 3.
