El Paso, TX — The UTEP women’s tennis team will travel to Norfolk, Va. to battle UAB at the 2014 Conference USA Women’s Tennis Championship April 16-20.
The No. 13-seed Miners (12-12, 2-1 C-USA) will take on the No. 12-seed Blazers (8-14, 1-5) on Wednesday, April 16 (2 p.m. ET/12 p.m. MT). The winner will then face No. 5-seed La Tech (14-6, 3-1) on Thursday (12 p.m. MT).
Seniors Rebeca Calvillo, Marie LeBlond and Gabi Vazquez will take part in their last matches as Miners. All three made an earnest impact on the program during their four-year careers for the Orange and Blue.
Calvillo is ranked No. 1 all-time in career doubles wins (74), while her 151-combined wins are ranked No. 2 all time. The native of Durango, Mexico is also tied for third-best in career singles wins (77).
LeBlond is ranked sixth all time in career singles wins (62) and is tied for sixth best in doubles victories (56). The native of Montreal, Canada has a combined 118 victories, ranking No. 7 all time.
Vazquez has won a combined 100 matches, ranking in the top 20 in program history. The native of Guaynabo, Puerto Rico has won 50-career singles matches and 50-career doubles matches.
The trio also excelled in the classroom, being named to the Conference USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll all four seasons.
During the 2014 spring season, Calvillo and junior Davina Meza have excelled on the doubles courts, forging a 15-4 record at the No. 1 position. The pair also compiled a 23-9 overall record – the most wins in school history for doubles wins in a single seasoan.
Also in doubles action, sophomore Matilda Rose Tench and Vazquez are 9-5 (1-0 at No. 2 and 8-5 at No. 3) during the spring campaign.
Meza is 23-11 during the season (15-7 in dual-match play) at the No. 2 spot, winning the last eight matches. Freshman Daphne Visscher got off to a slow start during the fall tournament season going 2-8, but has picked up her play, tallying a 14-8 mark during the spring dual-match season.
The Blazers are led by Pardis Kianoush’s 11 singles victories (9-10 at No. 3 and 2-0 at No. 4). Catherine Ragon (6-13) has won her last three matches, while Amy Lowther is 8-13 at the No. 2 position.
In doubles play, Lowther and Ragon have compiled a 10-6 mark and Rachel Daniel and Elaine Simon are 8-10 on the No. 1 court.
